We’ve always baked a ham in the oven with fantastic results. Then I added in high-altitude, an older inconsistent oven, couple kids under foot, big holiday dinners and my baked in the oven hams got drier and drier. In fact, I avoided baking them at all costs. What to do? I combed Pinterest and started experimenting.
The idea of a ham in the slow cooker intrigued me but I was skeptical. Really the slow cooker?
But hey, I’ve got a ranch crew to feed and be my sometimes less than willing taste testers.
Slow cooker hams rock my world. Even better, it frees up an oven for other parts of a meal.
Just remember that you are bringing the ham up to temp not slow cooking away for hours and hours and hours.
This recipe can be tailored to your favorite ham flavors. We love the pineapple and maple syrup combo.
You can swap the maple syrup out for brown sugar. I want to try apricot preserves in place of the maple syrup.
For a more savory favor profile, try adding dijon mustard.
I do admit to putting a ham in the slow cooker, pouring only maple syrup over the ham and 4 hours later…..great results.
The directions here are for a bone-in ham that has not yet been sliced. Caution: if you are using a pre-sliced, boneless ham it will come up to temperature much faster.
Be creative. All the ham needs in the slow cooker is a little moisture and a temperature test to get it to 160 degrees.
